Summer is just around the corner and our anxiety is at an all-time high thinking about the skincare challenges that await us not even a month from now. Tan, sunburn and excessive sweat are some of the most common summer skin woes that can really bring you down. But, what if we told you can get all the fixes for your summer skin problems from a dermat right now? That’s right! We got an expert to answer all your queries just in time for summer.
Meet Dr Jaishree Sharad, a celebrity dermatologist based in Mumbai. She has more than 18 years of experience in the field and many accolades to her credit. She is also the founder of Skinfiniti Aesthetic Skin and Laser Clinic. We asked her the solution to 10 of the most common summer skincare problems. BB: Can you avoid tanning? How can you get rid of it?
Dr Jaishree: If you apply a good amount of sunscreen with SPF 30 to 50 on your face and arms and reapply every two hours when you are outdoors, you can prevent the tan. While buying a sunscreen, look for PA+++ which is protection from UVA rays which are actually responsible for tanning. Take at least 1000mg vitamin C supplements, antioxidants like superoxide dismutase and 400 IU Vitamin E. With the help of these and umbrellas and scarves, you can prevent your face and other body parts from getting tanned.
If you have already developed tan, it may take up to three months to go on its own. With tan, the skin also burns. So, moisturise and wear sunscreen every day. You can use yogurt and honey everyday to get rid of the tan. You could also get treatments like fruit peels, microdermabrasion and hydra facials to get rid of tan. In case of a severe tan, after a month, you can get Q-switched Nd:YAG laser.
BB: How can you avoid and treat chafing?
Dr Jaishree: Moisturise the skin between your thighs and use a clotrimazole dusting powder like the Candid dusting powder after you take a shower.
BB: Prickly heat is common during summer. How can you prevent it?
Dr Jaishree: Prickly heat can occur especially on covered body parts because of blockage of sweat ducts and can be itchy and uncomfortable. You must wear light, cotton clothes. Also, dust some prickly heat powder or Abzorb powder or Candid powder on your back, chest, stomach and arms. Change your clothes if you are drenched in sweat to prevent prickly heat. Ice, lacto calamine and aloe vera lotion can be applied to soothe the affected areas.
BB: What is a good routine to follow for acne-prone skin?
Dr Jaishree: I recommend these tips for acne-prone skin:
– Firstly, pick a salicylic acid based face wash and wash your face at least twice a day.
– Keep micellar water and thermal spring water and use it at intervals during the day to prevent sweat or oil from clogging your pores.
– Use a water-based moisturiser.
– Make sure to use a matter water-based or gel-based sunscreen.
– Avoid any kind of creams and oils on the face as well as cream-based makeup.
– Avoid makeup as much as possible during summer.
– You can use tea tree oil or aloe vera on the acne at night.
BB: Skin problems like bacne and folliculitis are common in summer. How can you prevent and treat these?
Dr Jaishree: These problems are common in summer because the pores get clogged with sweat and grime, and organisms called C. acnes grow and multiply causing these tiny boils on the back. To avoid the accumulation of sweat and dirt, take a shower at least twice a day and wear cotton clothes. Apply dusting powder on your back after showering. Also, don’t get any oil massages during this period. If you already have acne, you can use a retinol-based cream on your back in the night twice a week.
BB: What are some skincare rules to follow to keep oiliness at bay?
Dr Jaishree: It is very similar to acne-prone skin, so use water-based sunscreens and moisturisers. Use thermal water and keep splashing it on your face. Use a face wash formulated with salicylic acid or glycolic acid or tea tree oil. Don’t slather on too many creams and products on your face. Instead keep it very basic and simple with cleanser and sunscreen during the day and a moisturiser at night. If you are above the age of 30, at bedtime, you can use serums instead of heavy creams.
BB: Can you suggest a summer-friendly diet for glowing skin?
– Drink a lot of water and stay hydrated.
– Have buttermilk, lime and lemon juice, watermelon juice and any kind of fresh fruit juice without added sugar.
– Opt for a lot of greens, leafy greens especially, as well as red and orange fruits and vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, beetroots and oranges.
BB: Why does pigmentation worsen in summer and how can you prevent it?
Dr Jaishree: It is primarily because the UV rays are very harsh in summer. Even the daylight penetrating through glass can increase the pigment melanin. When there is a lot of disposition of pigment melanin, pigmentation increases. The best thing to do is stay indoors. If you are outdoors, cover your face with a scarf and your hands with full-sleeved cotton garments. Also, wear sunscreen indoors and outdoors and reapply it every two hours, even if you are not sweating. Consume a lot of Vitamin C, Vitamin E and antioxidants, oranges and berries. Consult your dermat for a skin-lightening cream if needed but do not buy over-the-counter ointments as they can have steroids which are unsafe. For severe pigmentation, there are chemical peels and Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, which really help.
BB: How to treat sunburn and flushing in summer?
Dr Jaishree: If you have sunburn, apply a lot of ice and use cold, refrigerated calamine. Aloe vera gel is also very soothing and helps heal the skin. If it is severe, contact a dermat. We might give you an antibacterial with a mild cortisone cream to apply on the sunburn. Also, sunscreen and 1000mg Vitamin C are very important.
BB: How do you deal with excessive sweating and body odour?
Dr Jaishree: If you have excessive sweat and body odour, you first need to consult a dermatologist. Take an anti-fungal course. Use dusting powder on all your body folds like your underarms, neck, groin area and breasts as well. You must wear cotton clothes and change your clothes at least twice a day. Wash them in hot water and sun-dry to remove odour. Avoid onion and garlic in your diet. There are aluminium oxide hexahydrate sprays and lotions to reduce the sweat. If the sweat is excessive, there are botox injections that can be used, which last about four months.
BB: What are some of the biggest summer skincare mistakes according to you?
Dr Jaishree: The biggest mistake is that people are always in a rush and thus wear clothes on a damp surface right after a shower. It is very important in summer that you dry yourself completely and then apply a dusting powder on all your body parts, especially underarms, groin area and also between the toes, otherwise you develop smelly feet. Dry yourself and use a dusting powder to prevent any kind of fungus, which tends to grow in sweat and body folds. Make sure you wash and sun-dry your clothes because bacteria and fungi settle in them and you can get them back from the clothes even after you’ve showered. Use a liberal amount of sunscreen on all of the exposed parts of your body like your neck and hands as well. Plus, drink a lot of water.
